Winter weather can be tough on your car, and one of the most common problems is a stalled car or car that won’t start. If you find yourself stranded on the side of the road with a vehicle that won’t start, you can try a few things to get it up and running again.
Battery
First, check the battery. Cold weather can be hard on car batteries, and a weak or dead battery may be the reason your car won’t start. If the battery is the problem, you can jump-start the vehicle to get it running. Make sure you always have jumper cables in your car and follow the proper procedure for jump-starting a vehicle. If jump-starting the car doesn’t work, or if you suspect the battery is completely dead, you’ll need to replace it.
Fuel system
If the battery isn’t the problem, check the fuel system. Ensure there is enough fuel in the tank and check the fuel lines to ensure they are clear. If the fuel lines are clogged, the fuel may not reach the engine, causing it to stall. If you suspect a problem with the fuel system, try adding a fuel line antifreeze to the tank. This can help prevent fuel lines from freezing in cold weather.
Too cold
Another possibility is that the engine is too cold to start. In extremely cold weather, it can be tough for a car to start, even if the battery and fuel system are working properly. If the engine is too cold, try warming it up by using an engine block heater or if you know cold weather is coming try parking it in a heated garage.
If none of these solutions work, it’s possible that there is a deeper problem with your car that needs to be addressed by a mechanic. In that case, you’ll need to call for a tow to get the car to a repair shop.
