How to Properly Maintain Your Car Battery

A car battery is an essential component of a vehicle, and proper maintenance is crucial to ensure its longevity and reliability. Neglecting battery maintenance can lead to a weak battery or even a complete failure, leaving you stranded on the side of the road. Here are some tips for properly maintaining your car battery.

Keep the battery clean

Dirt and grime can accumulate on the battery terminals, causing a poor connection. If you notice a lot of buildup, disconnect the battery cables starting with the negative cable, which is usually black. Use a wire brush or baking soda and water to clean the terminals and remove any buildup. After cleaning, reconnect the cables and ensure they are tightened.

Keep the battery charged

A battery that is frequently discharged can lose its capacity over time. Make sure your battery is always fully charged by starting the engine regularly and taking your car for longer drives of at least 30 minutes every so often, especially during winter. If you aren’t driving your car, let it run for 15 minutes at least once a week.

Avoid overcharging

However, keep in mind that overcharging the battery can cause damage to the internal components and reduce its lifespan. Make sure to use a battery charger designed for your specific battery type and monitor the charging process. A trickle charger is a great way to safely charge your battery if your car is going to be parked for a long time. A trickle charger slowly adds charge to the battery.

Turn off electronics when you park the car

It’s easy to forget, but those lights inside your vehicle will drain your battery if kept on for long periods. Before you get out of your vehicle, do a quick check to ensure all lights and entertainment centers are entirely off.

Check the battery regularly

Regular checks of your battery’s voltage with a voltmeter will give you an idea of its condition. If you notice any issues or don’t have a way to check your battery at home, bring it in to get it checked by a professional.

By following these simple steps, you can extend the life of your car battery and avoid costly replacements.
