We’re almost at the end of our annual Lights Off campaign, so it’s time we talk about what your dashboard warning lights mean! There are quite a few warning lights that can come on, but here are some of the most common lights and what they’re telling you:
Battery light
This is a red light that has a plus and minus sign on it. It indicates that the battery isn’t being charged by the alternator, so it’s only running off of its own charge. This charge will eventually run out if the battery can’t get charged properly.
Oil pressure light
When this red light comes on that looks like an oil can, that means your oil levels are too low or that the oil is dirty. If refilling the oil doesn’t fix the problem, you could have an oil leak.
Check engine light
This light often has the word “check” on it and is an orange or yellow color. It can come on for various reasons such as needing to replace oxygen sensors, spark plugs, or the thermostat, or it could just be due to a loose gas cap. Sometimes the light can come on even when nothing is wrong, but you should get your car checked by a mechanic rather than assuming everything is fine. If the check engine light is flashing rather than being steady, pull over immediately and turn the vehicle off—you may even need to get it towed to a shop.
Tire pressure light
If this yellow exclamation point lights up, the pressure in one or more of your tires is too high or too low. Using a tire pressure gauge, measure the air in your tires and either fill them up with air or let some escape.
Engine temperature light
When this red thermometer pops up, it means the engine is overheating. Pull over as soon as you can and check the coolant level once the engine has cooled down.
Washer fluid light
This yellow warning light indicates that you’re low on windshield wiper fluid. Wiper fluid is important in keeping your windshield clear of debris, so refill the reservoir when you’re able to.
Anti-lock brake light
When a yellow light that says ABS lights up, there’s a problem with the anti-lock brake system. The ABS keeps wheels from locking up when you need to brake suddenly and keep the vehicle from spinning out of control.
There are many more dashboard warning lights that can come on, but knowing some of the most common ones can help you know what’s wrong with your vehicle and when you should get it looked at. During our Lights Off campaign, diagnostic scans are 50% off, so call to get your vehicle into the shop before the end of the month.
