Transmission Repair: When to Bring Your Car in

A vehicle’s transmission is a complex gearbox that makes sure your engine is spinning at the correct rate for speeding up or slowing down. This system prevents the engine from getting overloaded and reduces fuel consumption while still getting enough power. One of the many services Auto Works offers is transmission repair and replacement, but it can be difficult to know when your gearbox is having trouble. Here are some warning signs that will tell you it’s time to bring your vehicle into the shop.

Noises.

Nobody likes to hear loud, concerning noises while driving. This could be a variety of problems depending on where the sound is coming from, but clunking, buzzing, and humming are signs of a faulty transmission.

Hesitation.

If your car hesitates before switching gears, such as from park to reverse, the transmission isn’t working properly. You may also notice a pause between your foot hitting the gas pedal and the car actually moving. This is a clear sign that you need to take your vehicle into a repair shop.

Check engine light.

This light can come on due to a number of issues, which is why you should always bring your vehicle into the shop if the check engine icon is illuminated. If the transmission is having issues, the light should come on.

Burning smell.

If your transmission fluid is low or leaking, this can cause the transmission to overheat and produce a burnt smell. This causes the engine to run hot as well, so it’s important to either add more fluid or fix the leak.

When you bring your vehicle in due to any of the above concerns, the mechanic will let you know if the transmission needs to be repaired or replaced. A repair or “rebuild” is the cheaper option, but if the bad parts have caused too much damage to the rest of the system, it may not be an option.
