Although timing belts and timing chains are different, they ultimately do the same job in a vehicle. They both connect the engines crankshaft to the camshaft.
So, what are the differences?
The most obvious difference is that timing belts are made of rubber, while timing chains are made of metal chains.
Timing Chains:
Each has their own benefit and are different for certain vehicles, however, technology has made improvements in timing chains making for longer duration. Some of the improvements include less vibration and less noise all around in an engine. There are companies that also expect their timing chains to last an entire lifetime on the vehicles. Timing chains are located on the inside of an engine and therefore are lubricated by the engine oil.
Timing Belts:
Timing belts were typically less expensive and used more frequently in car models up until the late 90’s. Timing belts reduce noise and vibrations, however that comes at the cost of frequent checkups and maintenance. You should be getting a replacement every 60,000 – 105,000 miles depending on vehicle. Check your owner’s manual for manufacturers recommendation.
How do I know when I need to get my timing belt replaced?
- Mileage is the number one indicator
- When you’re going down the road and the engine stalls out
- If a car has sat in storage for some time – after temperature fluctuations and overall material cracking (timing belts) you can expect there to be some maintenance needed
Every vehicle is different, but overall, it’s a good idea to keep up with maintenance before a larger (and more costly) damage can occur.
